Fukagawa - A historical town in Tokyo

Have you ever seen Jidaigeki?

Jidaigeki is historical dramas (movies) that are stories depicting the Edo era in Japanese history. Such titles are Zatoichi which stars Kitano Takeshi and the Twilight Samurai, these movies are considered Jidaigeki.

Fukagawa Edo Museum (Fukagawa Edo Shiryou-Kan)

Many of Jidaigeki dramas from the Edo era are stories set in certain areas of Tokyo. If you watch a Jidaigeki drama on TV, you might hear certain city districts, like Nishonbashi, Shinagawa and Fukagawa. These towns are not fiction and still exist in Tokyo.

In Fukagawa, there is an interesting museum called the Fukagawa Edo Museum (Fukagawa Edo Shiryou-Kan). At this museum, there is a reconstruction of houses in Edo period (from the early 19th century) and looks like a movie set for Jidaigeki.

In addition, you are allowed to go inside each house and you can touch the household effects freely. It is fun opening drawers of the closets to see the clothes that Edo people used to live.

Kiyosumi Garden (Kiyosumi Teien)

Near the Fukagawa Museum, there is a Japanese garden called Kiyosumi Garden (Kiyosumi Teien). This garden is quite large and a traditional Japanese style garden in Tokyo and it is beautifully designed with carefully placed rocks.

To get to Kiyosumi Teien, it is about a 3-minute walk from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Subway Station (Station number E14 or Z11). From Kiyosumi Teien to the Fukagawa Edo museum is about a 5-minute walk.
