Bettara-ichi Market | Oct.19 - 20, 2023

With almost 300 years of history, this traditional market dedicated solely to Japanese food will take place in Nihonbashi's business quarter, with 500 stalls lining the street. In the evening, many business people stop by on the way back home.

What's Bettaraichi market?
During the mid-Edo period (1650 - 1750), this market originated in front of a shrine, Takarada Ebisu-jinja, to sell fish and vegetables on the 19th of October. This was done in preparation for the Ebisu-ko ceremony, which takes place on the following day, where merchant houses celebrate Ebisu (the god of business) and invite relatives and friends. Bettara (sweet pickled radish) sold at this market became so popular that people began to call the market Bettara-ichi (Bettara Market) later on.
