Fire Walking at Akiba-jinja Shrine
Nov. 6, 2025

Worshipers walk barefoot over hot coals to pray for good health and protection from fire.

Akiba-jinja Shrine in Taito was built in the early Meiji era (around 1868), as frequent large fires had troubled people in the area where Akihabara's Electric Town is today. The shrine was later relocated to its current site due to the construction of a railway station. The town of Akihabara is named after the Akiba-jinja shrine.

Akiba-jinja Shrine enshrines the god of good luck and fire protection. There are Akiba shrines throughout Japan, believed to protect against fire-related troubles.
