Fire Walking at Akiba-jinja Shrine | Nov. 6, 2023

Worshipers walk barefoot over hot coals to pray for good health and protection from fire.

Akiba-jinja Shrine in Taito was built in the early Meiji era (around 1868) as frequent large fires troubled people in the place where Akihabara's electric town is today. The shrine was later moved to its current location due to the establishment of a railway station. The town of Akihabara is named after the Akiba-jinja shrine.

Akiba-jinja Shrine enshrines the god of good luck and fire protection. There are Akiba shrines throughout Japan believed to protect against fire-related troubles.
