Campbelltown Wild Bird Forest in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture, is a bird zoo that aims to help people better understand and appreciate Australian wildlife. Koshigaya City in Saitama Prefecture is a sister city of Campbelltown, Australia, and the zoo opened in 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister city relationship.

The zoo is spread out over 5,350 square meters and features a variety of cockatoos, like Sulfur-crested Cockatoos, Major Mitchell's Cockatoos, and Cockatiels, all donated by the city of Campbeltown. You can also see wallabies and emus!

Access

Campbelltown Forest of Wild Birds is located in the southeastern part of Saitama Prefecture, accessible by train on the Tobu Skytree Line and bus. The closest station is Kita-Koshogaya Station. 北越谷駅

From Kita-Koshigaya Station (East Exit), take a bus and get off at the stop "Odakyu Yasaka Danchi Iriguchi 小田急弥栄(やさか)団地入口" (10-min ride). From the bus stop, it is a 5-minute walk. Buses run about 3 times an hour.

If you walk from Kita-Koshigaya Station, it will take about 45 minutes. It is nice walking along the waterway in a quiet residential area.

For those living in Saitama, getting there by bike is a good option. It will be a leisurely ride along the waterway.

Hisaizu-jinja Shrine

If you come to the bird zoo by bike, you might enjoy a relaxed ride around the Kita-Koshigaya area. Just south of Campbell Town Wild Bird Park, you’ll find Hisaizu Shrine, a historic spot with a Japanese garden and a large wisteria trellis that blooms in May and draws many visitors. You can also walk to the shrine from the bird zoo in about 20 minutes. It is a 25-min walk from Kita-Koshigaya station. The roads nearby are quite narrow and winding, so it’s safer to stick to the main roads, even if it takes a bit longer.

Koshigaya Aritaki Botanical Garden

Close to Hisaizu Shrine, almost next to the shrine area, there’s an arboretum where you can see many rare plants and trees collected by the botanist Mr. Aritake. Admission to the arboretum is just 100 JPY. The bush-like garden is best to visit in spring or autumn. Watch out for annoying bugs in summer.

For a break after cycling or walking, you can take a rest at one of the cozy cafes around Kita-Koshigaya Station.
