A Peaceful Escape into Historic Yokohama
Nestled in a quiet area of Yokohama, Sankeien Garden offers visitors a peaceful escape into traditional Japanese culture and landscape design.
The spacious area features 17 historic structures relocated from Kyoto and Kamakura. During spring, various cherry blossom species will adorn the garden, set against the backdrop of the Three-storied pagoda.

Japanese houses in authentic traditional styles
One of Sankeien’s most distinctive features is its collection of historic Japanese houses scattered throughout the grounds. Many of these buildings are more than a century old and were relocated from different regions of Japan. Rather than placing them randomly, the garden's creators carefully arranged each structure to harmonize with the surrounding scenery. As visitors walk along the garden’s paths, they encounter elegant wooden houses, tea pavilions, and gates that appear naturally integrated into the landscape.

Choshukaku, a villa relocated from Kyoto.
The buildings and the garden together create the seasonal beauty of Japan.
The garden is famous for its seasonal beauty. In spring, cherry blossoms frame the historic buildings and reflect on the ponds. Summer brings lush greenery, while autumn colors transform the garden into a vivid tapestry of red and gold. Even in winter, the quiet scenery and traditional architecture create a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

In spring, the Sakura trees by the garden pond create a charming scene.
While Yokohama is widely known for its modern attractions, shopping districts, and waterfront entertainment areas, Sankeien reveals another side of the city. Spending a few hours in this tranquil garden allows travelers to experience a more traditional atmosphere and gain a deeper appreciation for Japan’s architectural and cultural heritage.
