Located just across from the Ueno Station Park Exit, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan is a music and performing arts hall. It's a cultural facility that has hosted numerous world-class performances, including opera, ballet, and classical concerts, and is also the home of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

The building was designed by architect Kunio Maekawa to deliver an incredible sound experience and is known for its outstanding acoustics. It’s been almost 60 years since it opened, so it’s time for a refresh. To tackle some wear and tear and to make sure everything is safe and up to date, the whole building is going to be closed for major renovations.

This photo was taken before the start of the Tokyo Music Competition, held on January 12, 2026. The three winners performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic Kyoiku Kyokai Orchestra. All three delivered stunning performances. CHUNG Kanghan (Tenor, 1st prize of Voice section) was particularly impressive. He's only 21 years old. It was an exhilarating experience to witness the birth of a star.
